Roma vs Bayer Leverkusen Prediction & Betting Tips - Europa League
by Ian John | in Europa League Predictions
The first leg of the Europa League semi-final between AS Roma and Bayer Leverkusen takes place at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday 2nd April (8pm UK Time). After taking over from Jose Mourinho earlier in the season, Daniele De Rossi has returned to the club where he made his name and guided them into the semi-finals of another European competition after defeating Milan home and away in the previous round. The ex-Italian international has also led the team to 5th in Serie A and a potential Champions League place next season, if Serie A get that additional space in the competition in the new format for 2024/25. However, if they can win the Europa League that would also guarantee them a spot in the Champions League next year too.
However, the Roman side face an extremely tough opponent in the form of the new Bundesliga Champions. Bayer Leverkusen remain unbeaten after an incredible 51 games in all competitions this season. In the Europa League, they have scored in every game, as well as winning eight of the ten games they have played, drawing the other two. West Ham were beaten 3-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals. Manager Xabi Alonso and his team are now just seven games away from completing an unbeaten season, which would see them win all three major trophies that they entered. That potential feat will add its own pressure on this already difficult first leg tie.

Roma - Bayer Leverkusen: Form Analysis
Since the 20th January, AS Roma have won nine, drawn three and lost two of their 14 Serie A games, although both defeats came at home (against Inter and Bologna). They have also lost just one of six Europa League ties since then too. They came through the Playoff round on penalties after a 2-2 aggregate draw with Feyenoord (both legs being drawn 1-1). They then thrashed Brighton 4-0 in the Round of 16 first leg before losing 1-0 in the second leg at the AMEX. In the quarter-finals, they beat AC Milan 1-0 in the San Siro then 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico to earn a shot at breaking Leverkusen’s unbeaten record. Potentially earning themselves a place in the final against either Atalanta or Marseille. This past weekend they drew 2-2 against Napoli in Naples, Tammy Abraham’s late equaliser giving Roma a point.
Leverkusen come into this fixture having drawn all of their last three games, away to West Ham, Dortmund and then at home to VfB Stuttgart at the weekend. In all those games, they secured very late equalisers to retain their unbeaten run. Pressure, it seems, is clearly beginning to tell. After winning their group comfortably with six wins from six, Leverkusen then came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 against Qarabag in the first leg and then repeated that, this time to win 3-2 in the home leg for a 5-4 aggregate win. A 2-0 win over West Ham was followed by a 1-1 draw in the second leg in London to earn them a shot at AS Roma in the semi-finals.

Roma & Bayer Leverkusen Squad Analysis
AS Roma could be without striker Romelu Lukaku for this game. The Belgian striker has been sidelined with a thigh problem since mid-April and he is rated as a 50/50 chance, at best, for this game. Ex-Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is out with a groin injury, while Turkish defender Zeki Celik is suspended for the first leg of the tie. If Lukaku is ruled out then it looks like a choice between Tammy Abraham and Sardar Azmoun for the central strikers’ role for the home side.
Leverkusen will be without young midfielder Noah Mbamba who is not eligible for the tournament. Additionally, strikers Borja Iglesias (muscular problem) and Adam Hlozek (ankle) are also both ruled out through injury. Xabi Alonso doesn’t have any of his players suspended for this game and it is likely their main attacking threat will come from Nigerian striker Victor Boniface, who has five goals in his seven Europa League outings, and midfield sensation Florian Wirtz, who has scored three goals in his eight appearances in the tournament.
