On Sunday, Marseille and Rennes will be meeting for the third time this season, this time in Ligue 1, hosted by Rennes. Both sides, separated by three points, are eying European slots next season, Marseille seventh and Rennes eighth. Rennes have garnered 36 points so far, four adrift of sixth place, which guarantees European football. Having played in the Europa League this season, Rennes will hope to make the cut again or at least higher. Still in the French Cup, this could be another avenue for European football that they are looking at. First though, they’ll need to improve on their run of just a win in the last three matches. They are coming from a 2-2 draw with Lille which they felt should have ended in a win. Rennes led 2-0 after 20 minutes in the game and were cruising, until they conceded twice in the final six minutes. That result meant they conceded four goals in their last two matches and eight in five. Rennes have no clean sheet in the last seven matches but failed to score once in 10. At home, they have four wins in six matches and both teams scored in their last five.

While Rennes’ European sojourn is over, Marseille are still in it. In their last game, a Europa League encounter, they lost 3-1 to Villarreal but proceeded 5-3 on aggregate. That was their first defeat in six matches and they will be keen on bouncing back. Prior to that, Marseille had registered five straight wins. While they’ve had this great run, Marseille have found it really hard to keep clean sheets. They have just two in their last 13 matches and in most matches, it is a case for both teams scoring. In their last meeting with Rennes, it was the same case, a French Cup game that ended 1-1 before Rennes prevailed on penalties. However, in the reverse league fixture, Marseille had registered a 2-0 win in an ill-tempered game that had both teams finish with 10 men. Another big contest is in the offing here, with Marseille out to improve on an inconsistent away run. They have one win only in the last six away games in all competitions.
