One of the biggest games in Ligue 1 this weekend will pit Rennes hosting Lens on Sunday, two teams with European football ambitions. Placed eighth, Rennes’ top-six ambitions remain faint, which is the same to Lens’ Europa League hopes. A return to winning ways last time out was welcome in light of Rennes’ top-six hopes. They came from behind twice to beat Metz 3-2 away from home for their second win in seven matches. Arnaud Kalimuendo’s stoppage time goal did it for Les Rennais and they have to build on it here. That win saw them move to within four points of Lens, in sixth place, the final position for European football. Having been in the Europa League this season, Rennes were hopeful of making it better next season but their league run hasn’t reflected those ambitions. In their last 10 league matches, they managed just three wins. Two of those wins were against sides struggling in the lower reaches of the league standings.

While Rennes are eyeing Lens’ position in the standings, Lens will be more worried by Lyon, who are just two points behind them. Lens themselves are two points behind fifth placed Nice, who have a game in hand and better goal difference. The final two matches of the season will be bruising for these teams and Lens will hope to clear away at this point. They boosted their hopes with a 2-0 victory at home to Lorient last time out. That was only their second win in the last eight matches. It has indeed been a shaky run for the visitors, who have also failed to win in five of their last six away matches. Lens will however want to look at their head-to-head record against Rennes with optimism. They haven’t lost in this fixture the last seven times they met. In that run, Lens won four times but their most recent ended 1-1.
