Group E of the UEFA Champions League has two debutants; French side Rennes and Russian side Krasnodar. The two face off on Match Day 1, with Rennes playing host as they become the 11th French side to take part in the Champions League. Rennes had a fine finish in the French Ligue 1 last season, helped on by the stoppage caused by coronavirus, and they have so far carried on with the good form and are second in Ligue 1 after seven rounds. Rennes are unbeaten in Ligue 1 so far, after seven matches and they will look at Krasnodar as a beatable opponent, before they plan on their other tougher matches in this group – Chelsea and Sevilla. While they have good returns in attack, scoring in each of their seven league games so far, Rennes have managed just one clean sheet in the process, and they have shown a great deficiency in dealing with counter attacks. Rennes have led in their last two matches, but went on to drop points, signifying a lack of defensive discipline. But they can bank on a home form that has seen then win two of their three games already this season, and scored twice in each of them, while conceding one goal in each.

While Rennes will be playing their first ever Champions League game, Krasnodar will be appearing at the group stages for the first time ever. They saw off PAOK 4-2 on aggregate in the third qualifying round to get here and will be looking to continue in that spirit. Heading here, the Russians have three wins in their six previous Champions League matches and one of them was against FC Porto last season. They have five wins in their last 10 matches and just one clean sheet in the process while they have failed to score in two. A patchy away run has left Krasnodar with three wins in their last 10 away matches and with three clean sheets in the process. This will only be their fourth away Champions League game; they have won two of their earlier three and have no clean sheet in the three away matches. With three goals in the last five matches, Remy Cabella will be the man to watch for Krasnodar. He scored the opener as the team beat Rubin Kazan 3-1 in their most recent clash.
