Championship hopefuls Remo Stars and Akwa United will on Saturday face off in the Nigerian Professional League with Remo hosting the round 16 fixture. Akwa come into this match in second place in Group A with 26 points while Remo are a further five points behind in sixth place. With three rounds of play left to conclude the regular season, Remo can’t afford to drop points going forward if they are to finish in the top three and secure a place in the championship playoffs. This is however not up to them as their four straight draws have seen their top three chances slip from their grasp and they now hope for the teams above them to drop points for them to pounce. A win over Akwa, their first against them in the top flight, will go a long way towards taking them closer to their quest. Three of those four wins have come against teams angling for the playoffs with the latest, a 1-1 draw coming against third on the standings Enyimba.

Akwa United have their fate in their hands and also cannot afford to drop points going forward with just two points separating them from fourth on the table Plateau United. They come to this match after securing a crucial 3-1 win over relegation-threatened Kwara United that ended a two-match run without a win. Before the win over Kwara, Akwa had lost to Plateau. They have had a topsy-turvy season so far, unable to string up wins and have won back-to-back matches just once all season. They will however be confident of securing another win on Saturday as they are unbeaten against Remo Stars and have won the last three matches against them including a 3-1 victory at home in the first encounter of the season.
