Real Madrid have one final chance to challenge Atletico Madrid for the La Liga title when they host Villarreal. It is not all in Real’s hands as they need Atletico Madrid, who are ahead of them by two points, to drop points. Second placed Real have 81 points going to this game and Villarreal, who are seventh, go to the game on 58 points. Real Madrid have secured second spot and will take credit for pushing this title race to the wire though chances that they’ll win it are heavily dependent on final day drama. A 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao ensured Real stayed in the title chase to the final day and though they are unbeaten in the league since end of January, they will rue the draws against Getafe, Betis and Sevilla.

Meanwhile, Villarreal are coming from two straight wins after their humiliation by Celta Vigo, which is their only loss in the last six matches. They thrashed Sevilla 4-0 in their last game, following up on the 2-0 win over Real Valladolid, but here it will be a different kind of challenge. Unai Emery’s side has four wins and as many losses in the last eight league matches but away from home they have four wins in five, with the only loss coming against Deportivo Alaves. The Yellow Submarines are winless in the last six matches against Real Madrid, though four have ended in draws. The team named for this game will be in regard to the fact that a few days later, Villarreal will be taking part in the Europa League final. While Villarreal will be looking to win here and rise Unai Emery will not use his key men for this game.
