Real Madrid could only draw at Elche on Wednesday. They begin this first La Liga game of 2021 in second place and look to get back into winning ways with a victory over eighth placed Celta Vigo. Real are now two points behind leaders Atletico Madrid but  from two games more and would have been level if not squandering a first half lead. The draw ended a run of five straight league games for Real who are seven points clear of third, though that would be cut to four if Sociedad can win at Athletic Bilbao on New Year's Eve. Now Real return to home soil, where they are looking for a fourth win in a row. There have been some good scalps too with victories over leaders Atletico Madrid and Granada. Overall this season, Real have won five and lost two, being beaten by Cadiz and Alaves. Four of the last five home league games have seen over 2.5 goals scored with both teams scoring in three of the last five.

Celta Vigo have been in top form at home but struggle on their travels. Wednesday saw them win 2-1 at home to bottom-of-the-table Huesca, taking their unbeaten league run to six gamesThey have only one away league victory this season, a 2-0 win at Athletic Bilbao this month. Of their eight games, five have ended level, including three of the last five. Away form hasn't been too productive for a while now. Vigo have only two wins in their last 20 La Liga away fixtures with 11 drawn. They drew their last game at Real Madrid but have no wins in eight, since a victory in 2006.
