The Santiago Bernabeu will be the venue for the latest installment of the Madrid Derby this Thursday, when Athletico Madrid makes the short trip across town to take on hometown rivals, Real Madrid, in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey. Following a weak display in El Classico a couple of weeks ago, Los Blancos have responded with back-to-back wins over Athletic Bilbao and Villareal in the Round of 16. In league terms, Real Madrid has been performing slightly below their own high standards but remains just three points behind Barcelona at the top and 10 clear of their opponents. The last time these two met was in La Liga in September 2022, and Real Madrid came away with a 2-1 victory. Real Madrid is on an excellent home run, undefeated in their last 10; however, they did concede in nine of those matches.

Athletico Madrid's season has been average to date, having dropped points in several matches that they would have been expecting to take the maximum from. Chances of challenging for the title this season seem to be unlikely for Diego Simeone, but a win over their old foes may give them the boost in confidence they need to close the gap on sides above them. Athletico Madrid is currently fourth in the league, with 31 points in 18 matches, level with Villareal and seven behind Real Sociedad in third. The visitors are always competitive in this fixture, as they showed in the last match at this ground, where they came away with a 1-0 victory.
