Reading - Sheffield United: Form Analysis
Reading FC have been in topsy-turvy form all season and arrive to this match having won just three matches in 2023 across all competitions. Paul Ince’s men lost 5-0 last time out away to Middlesbrough which was their heaviest defeat of the season and their sixth in 11 matches played this year. A leaky defence and a lack of firepower upfront have coincided to puncture their hopes for promotion as they sit in 15th place with 44 points, 11 points from the promotion playoff places. They have gone without scoring five times since the turn of 2023 and have conceded in 10 of their last 11 matches. Despite all this, the Royals can take comfort from the fact that they will be at home for this match, where they haven’t lost a match since November. Reading have won five of their last seven matches at home across all competitions, including the last two. In attack, they have improved immensely while playing in front of their home fans and have scored less than two goals a match only once in this unbeaten run. Their defence however has continued to keep giving and they have kept just two clean sheets in their last seven matches.
Sheffield United come into this match on the back of a 1-0 loss away to Blackburn Rovers which saw them fall even further behind in the title race as well as allow the teams below them to close the gap. It is safe to assume that they will not catch up to leaders Burnley who are 13 points above them with their immediate concern now being to, at the very least, maintain their four-point gap over third and fourth place. Paul Heckingbottom’s men have struggled for the better part of this year and have won just four out of their last nine matches in the league. They have lost three of their last four games but a positive for them is that their form up front hasn’t waned and they have failed to score just once in this woeful run. Their form away from home has also taken a hit and after winning five straight matches on the road to close out 2022, they have not won away from home in the league this year and have lost their last two away games. Sheffield scored four past Reading without reply earlier in the season.

Reading & Sheffield United Squad Analysis
Reading could continue to be without Junior Hoilett for this match due to injury but should have Dean Bouzanis back after the goalkeeper missed the game against his parent club Middlesbrough. Strikers Tom Ince and Andy Carroll have scored 15 goals between them this season in the league and will again be expected to provide the goals against Sheffield.
Sheffield were boosted by the return from injury of Billy Sharp and George Baldock in the game against Blackburn and the two will add needed depth on the bench with Iliman Ndiaye and Oliver McBurnie expected to again lead the line. The two players sit tied at the top of the club’s scorers’ chart and have scored 21 goals in the league between them.
