Rangers face St. Johnstone in the late game in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday, with the home side needing to win to keep pace with Celtic and Aberdeen at the top of the table. Philippe Clement’s Gers were five points adrift of the top two heading into this weekend meaning that they cannot afford to slip up against Simo Valakari’s Saints. Rangers come into this game on the back of three strong home wins in the Premiership so far this season. That included bagging six goals against Ross County on Matchday 3. They also beat Hibs 1-0 last weekend but suffered at the hands of Lyon midweek in the Europa League, losing at Ibrox 4-1 to the French side.

Having drawn at Hearts and lost away to Celtic, Clement’s team cannot afford to drop more points behind the top two, even at this early point in the season. Currently, after six games, Rangers lie third in the table.

On the other hand, their opponents, St. Johnstone, lie 10th in the table with just one win in seven games played. That poor start saw Craig Levein ousted as manager and Simo Valakari coming in to replace him. 

Defensively, St. Johnstone has struggled. They have conceded a division-high 17 goals in their seven matches so far this season. Perhaps their only morsel of solace is that all four points they have earned have come in away games.

However, their recent record against Rangers is awful, and they have not scored in any of the last six matches against the Ibrox outfit, losing them all.
