Metz’s stay in Ligue 1 is under a big threat but they could make a positive step with an away win at Strasbourg. Heading into this Sunday encounter, Metz occupy the relegation playoff position, seven points behind Strasbourg, whose league spot is secure. A third straight defeat last time out, falling 3-1 to Le Havre left Strasbourg on 36 points after 32 matches. They do have enough points to secure survival but a final home game calls for a positive result and they’ll have to put in more effort. The defeat to Le Havre was the second straight time Patrick Vieira’s side lost by that margin, having also fallen to Nice. Their earlier run of four undefeated games in Ligue 1 is now a distant memory and they can no longer finish in the top half. Still, two wins in the final two games will be a welcome way to end the season for Strasbourg. For the better part of the season, defence has been Strasbourg’s biggest concern. It is so reflected in their recent matches, keeping just two clean sheets in the last 21 league games. In their last 10 home league matches, both teams conceded in eight.

Metz, who have four straight losses against Strasbourg, are under more pressure coming into this game. They have to win to keep their hopes up. If they can better Lorient’s result this weekend, Metz will be sure of at least not getting relegated right away. Having to play in the relegation decider is a chance they’ll grab under the circumstances. Their fate is no longer in their hands after their 3-2 loss to Rennes in an ill-tempered game last time out. In a game they twice took the lead, Metz completely lost control in the latter stages. They even saw their lead scorer Georges Mikautadze sent off after a needless confrontation. That marked a second straight defeat for the visitors, leaving them on 29 points and an inferior goal difference. The last time they played an away league game, Metz beat Le Havre 1-0. That marked just their third win in 13 away league matches, a run they’ll want to improve on here.
