China will seek to confirm their place in the knockout rounds of the AFC Asia Cup when they play Qatar next. The two nations have been competing in Group A where after two matchdays, Qatar are top and China second. Qatar have already confirmed their place in the next round after winning their two opening fixtures. Tintin Marquez could therefore choose to tinker with his squad here and give a breather to some of his starters. Qatar, who are the hosts of this year’s edition, have won both their matches without conceding. After thumping Lebanon 3-0 on matchday one, the Maroons were 1-0 winners over Tajikistan last time out. This allowed them to qualify for the knockout rounds for only the third time in their history. Qatar were crowned continental champions in the last edition in 2019.

China have drawn their two opening games 0-0. To at least be certain of qualifying for the next round, Aleksandar Jankovic’s men need to win here. This is easier said than done considering that China have won only twice in their last nine outings. The Dragons have not won in four games and have lost twice. But having qualified for the knockout rounds in the last two editions, they will be confident of getting the job done. China have only three times in their 12 appearances at the Asia Cup exited at the group stage. One of those times was in 2011 when hosts Qatar peeped them to the last qualifying spot thanks to a 2-0 victory.
