Portugal manager Fernando Santos has termed his team’s playoff clash against Turkey as the toughest game of his career. He will however hope for a win in the World Cup qualification playoff semi final to set up a game against either Italy or North Macedonia. Portugal find themselves in this situation after falling 2-1 at home to Serbia in the last game at the group stages and that was a second straight winless game. The Portuguese however head to this game having lost just that game in their last seven matches, where they have managed five wins. Four of their last five matches have ended in Portugal keeping clean sheets. Portugal have 10 wins in their last 11 World Cup qualification matches and in 20 World Cup qualifiers, they’ve lost just once. In the 20 World Cup qualification matches they have 14 clean sheets 

As for Turkey, their main undoing has been a weak defence; in their last 10 matches they have just two clean sheets. In the group matches, Turkey bagged wins in each of the last three matches but it was the 6-1 loss to Netherlands that made the difference, Turkey finishing two points below the Dutch. Turkey have scored in each of their last five matches; the last time out they won 2-1 away to Montenegro and they have scored two or more goals in the last three games. Turkey and Portugal last faced off in a friendly match in 2012; Turkey won, but here we have a quite tough encounter that each will need to pull their weight. In the last five away matches in World Cup qualifiers, Turkey have emerged winners in four, with the only loss being against the team that finished top in their group - Netherlands. They have scored two more goals in four of the last five away matches and managed two clean sheets.
