Former European champions Portugal will be back to action for the first time after the 2022 World Cup, with a home game against Liechtenstein in Group J of the 2024 European Championship qualifiers. Portugal, like their visitors, are under new management. They will for the first time in nine years go onto the pitch without the iconic Fernando Santos on the touchline. Roberto Martinez is the man in charge now and will be targeting a flying start. Portugal’s last outing was against Morocco in the World Cup quarter finals and it was a disappointing one as they lost 1-0. They have the chance to start afresh and three wins in their last five matches should give them confidence against their lowly ranked opponents. In the last four qualification matches in this competition, they kept three clean sheets.

Liechtenstein are coming face to face with a very familiar opponent, however, in their seven meetings with Portugal, they’ve never won any. The best they’ve done was a draw once. This match finds them in really poor form as well, having lost each of their last 13 matches. Liechtenstein are actually without a win in their last 25 matches and have conceded twice in each of their last five games coming into this one. The visitors have scored just one goal in their last 13 matches and away from home they’ve taken straight losses in the last six matches. All of their last seven meetings with Portugal have ended in over 2.5 goals, with the Portuguese keeping clean sheets in five of them.
