Neither of these clubs are having the best of seasons so far. However, the fans of both clubs won't be thinking about that in this Carabao Cup third round tie. It's a south coast derby and one of the most bitter rivalries in English football, if not the world. Portsmouth are in League One and after losing in the play-offs last season, are just one place above the relegation zone this time around. The weekend saw them lose 1-0 away at Wycombe Wanderers and they have just one win from seven league games but are unbeaten at home with one win and two draws. They have already caused two shocks in this competition with victories over Championship sides Birmingham City and QPR.

Southampton are 12th in the Premier League at the time of writing this preview. They have won two of their six league matches this season but lost 3-1 at home to Bournemouth on Friday evening. The Saints have a good record in this competition and reached the final in the 2016/17 season losing to Manchester United. Over 90 minutes, that cup final defeat is the only one of the last eight away games in this competition that has been lost. They will make some changes for this match but there is still a class gap between the Premier League and League One. Go for Southampton to get the away win that will make them even more unpopular in Portsmouth.
