We are all set for the second week of action after resumption of top flight football in Portugal and Portimonense will be hosting Benfica. This will be Match Day 26 and Portimonense head here placed 17th with 19 points while Benfica are top of the standings on 60 points. Portimonense registered a crucial win in their last game, beating Gil Vicente for their first win in 13 league matches. Despite that, they remain six points below the safety zone and this game against Benfica turns out to be another crucial game. In their last 13 league matches, Portimonense have not scored more than one goal in a game and they only have three clean sheets in 15 matches. They have been weak in both attack and defence, which has left them with just three wins from 25 matches, the least number of wins in the entire league. They are also the side with the least goals scored (17) and will have a daunting task against the league leaders, who hit them 4-0 in the first leg. Two of their three wins in the season have come at home; perhaps this would give Portimonense some impetus. However, looked on the background of two home wins in 12 matches, it doesn’t paint a very good picture. The fact that they have failed to score in three of their last five home league matches also leaves them as underdogs ahead of this game. In nine matches across all competitions, Portimonense have managed just one win over Benfica.

On the other hand, Benfica are not enjoying the best of times. They are joint top with FC Porto after their 0-0 draw with Tondela, this heavily aided with Porto’s loss to Famalicao. From the opening matches after the league’s restart, only one of the top seven teams managed a win – Famalicao. The draw with Tondela marked a fourth straight winless game for Benfica across all competitions though they are unbeaten in the last five matches. It was also the first clean sheet for them in four matches. Two clean sheets in their last seven league matches signifies a concern in the Benfica defence and the fact that they have just one win in their last six matches should worry them even more. However, this worry is mainly due to the close competition with FC Porto, and not Portimonense who they have beaten in six of their nine meetings. Benfica have the best defence and attack in the league and also the joint least losses. They have managed 19 wins in 25 matches and 10 of these have come away from home. They have scored in each of their away matches this season and in eight of them, they have scored at least two goals.
