With just three league games to go, there’s plenty at stake in most League Two fixtures, but the Port Vale vs Grimsby Town fixture has more than most. The Valiants are pushing hard to win the league and secure automatic promotion. The Mariners sit outside the playoff spots on goal difference alone behind Colchester United. Currently, Port Vale sit on 76 points from 43 games, enough to see them top of the table by a point from Doncaster Rovers with Bradford a point further back and Walsall just three points behind them. Grimsby lie in eighth with 66 points from 43 games, but with a -5 goal difference compared to seventh-placed Colchester’s +11.

Port Vale had been on a great run of form, winning four games in a row, including a 5-0 win over Bromley in their last home game. But at the weekend, they travelled to bottom of the table Carlisle and went down 3-2, missing a penalty late in the game that would have secured them a vital point. 

Grimsby’s inconsistent form has continued in recent weeks, a 3-1 home win over Morecambe was followed by a 2-2 draw at Harrogate but on Good Friday, the Mariners were well beaten 4-0 at home by in-form Swindon Town.
