The Philippines will face Switzerland in their first match of the FIFA Women's World Cup on Friday. Also in Group A are co-hosts New Zealand and Norway who begin the tournament on Thursday. The Philippines are currently ranked 46th in the world and come into this match following a 2-1 against Vietnam in the Southeast Asian games back in May. They have been in good nick in recent times, recording five wins in their last six matches, with their only loss in that time coming against Myanmar. The Asian representatives were equally impressive during the Women's Olympic Qualifying, where they topped Group E with a perfect record of three wins in three in a group that also featured Hong Kong, Pakistan, and Tajikistan. The Philippines Women will be making history in this match as it will mark the first time that either the men or women have ever competed in a World Cup main event. They have never faced this opponent in a competitive match and will be hoping to get their maiden tournament appearance off to a winning start. However, they are the massive outsiders at odds of 21.0 to win the match.
Meanwhile, currently ranked 20th according to FIFA, Switzerland Women come into this match after a difficult preparation period. They had an excellent World Cup qualifying campaign where they were only narrowly edged out of the top spot in Group G by Italy, but managed to overcome Wales in the playoff rounds. Since then, though, the Swiss Women failed to win a single of their seven friendly matches leading up to this tournament. During that time, they recorded five draws and two losses. They have featured in this competition only once in the past, which was in 2015, and that was also the first time that the Swiss men and women qualified for the World Cup simultaneously. They did not qualify in 2019. Group A also features New Zealand and Norway, and both these sides would have been targeting this fixture as one that they can win.
