Super League 1 giants Panathinaikos and Olympiakos will face off in the first leg of the Greek Football Cup on Wednesday. This is the first of two legs and will be played at Stadio Apostolos Nikolaidis in Athens. The hosts currently lead their domestic league, while the visitors are fourth. Panathinaikos made it to the quarter-final of this competition last season before they were beaten by PAOK 3-1 on aggregate. However, they come into this match in good form and following a 2-1 win over Panaitolikos over the weekend. That marked their third consecutive league win on the bounce and kept them two points ahead of AEK Athens in the league standings. The hosts are also unbeaten in their last six league home games and have won each of their last five. During their win streak, Panathinaikos scored 18 goals in five games and two or more in each match. They also won the last match against this opponent 3-0 and are the favourites for Wednesday’s showdown. 

Meanwhile, Olympiacos reached the last four in this competition last season before they were knocked out by the eventual winners AEK Athens. The visitors have had a mixed season to date, managing 32 points from their first 17 league games. They have recorded ten wins, three draws and four losses in that time, leaving them eight points behind their opponents in this match. The Red and Whites will head into this match off the back of a 2-1 home loss to AEK over the weekend, which extended their current winless run to three matches, including a defeat to Lamia and a stalemate against Atromitos. In their last five away games in all competitions, Olympiacos have managed just one win while drawing two and losing two. Still, they did manage an against the odds victory at this venue on their last visit and cannot be written off from this contest just yet.
