Panama will aim to keep their unbeaten record intact when they play Qatar on Sunday in the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals. The winner of this match will play either of the two co-hosts USA or Canada in the semifinals. Panama finished top in Group C after picking up seven points from their three matches. After winning their opening two rounds, Thomas Christiansen’s charges drew 2-2 with El Salvador in their final group match. They will now seek to win their first match against the Middle Eastern nation. Panama and Qatar have played each other twice before. Once in a build-up match and the other in the last Gold Cup edition in 2021. Los Canaleros have never won the competition but have twice finished as runners-up.

Qatar are making back-to-back knockout round appearances at the Gold Cup. The Maroons were invited to grace the competition in 2021 and ended up finishing third. They will target making the final this time around and possibly winning the tournament. Carlos Queiroz’s men finished second in Group B behind Mexico. They narrowly finished ahead of Honduras due to goal difference as both teams finished with four points. Qatar were on the verge of elimination were it not for their 1-0 win over Mexico in their final group match. This was their first clean sheet in eight matches and they will hope that defensive rigidity remains against Panama. Qatar are unbeaten against Panama. They won the last time they played each other, which was last year in a test match that ended 2-1.
