The opening game of the third round of matches in the Brazilian Serie A will see top rivals Palmeiras and Corinthians face off as they seek early control of proceedings. Both sides have tasted defeat in their opening two matches and head here on three points each though hosts Palmeiras are seventh and Corinthians 10th based on goal difference. Palmeiras have had a good run in the Copa Libertadores and their title defence there is going well. They however need to replicate this domestically and their opening day loss to Flamengo and later elimination from the Brazilian Cup exposed their struggles. The South American champions were beaten at home by Serie B side CRB in their last game and exited the cup competition. That loss left them with one clean sheet in the last four matches while their struggles in Serie A are well documented after winning just two of the last 11 league games. They are very strong at home though; in their last 12 league games there, they have no loss, only four draws.

Corinthians are also fresh from getting dumped out of the Brazilian Cup after a 0-0 draw with Atletico Goianiense. That was their third game in four without scoring a goal and after managing just one goal in their last four matches, they will need a better plan in attack going to the Palmeiras clash. Defensively, their performance can pass, backed by three clean sheets in their last five matches, the most recent two coming right ahead of this game. Their Serie A run isn’t the best either, with just two wins in their last 10 league matches, and five losses. Away from home, in the league, they have four losses in the last six matches.
