Palmeiras and Ceara meet in this opening round match of the Brazilian football league. This will be a rematch as these teams met in the last match of the previous season with Palmeiras coming out on top with a tough fought 1-0 win. The home team had a busy preseason playing in the Campeonato Paulista and were eventually crowned champions beating Sau Paulo 4-0 in the decisive second leg of the final. They had lost the first leg of the final 3-1 but showed great fighting spirit to come back and crush them in the second leg. Palmeiras have only lost once in their last 15 matches across all competitions. In their last match they beat Dep. Tachira 4-0 to kick off their Copa Libertadores campaign in style. Palmeiras will be looking to start their league challenge in the same impressive manner and will want an improvement on last season’s third place finish.

Ceara had an excellent 2-1 win in their last match against Argentinian side Independiente in the Copa Sudamericana. They were also very active during the preseason but lost in the quarter finals of the Copa Do Nordeste losing on penalties to CRB. They need a good start to their league season so that they can improve on last season’s 11th place. Ceara have also been in good form losing only twice in their last 14 matches. Their away record shows just one loss in their last six matches. They have been excellent in defence and have conceded just two goals in their last seven matches across all competitions.
