Palermo play host to Cagliari at the Renzo Barbera, in what should be a competitive matchup between two historic Italian sides. As things stand, the hosts are in fourteenth place and just a point shy of the relegation play-off places, while Cagliari are eleventh, just two points ahead of their opponents. The fact that Cagliari are three points away from relegation play-offs and a point away from promotion play-offs served to underline the fine margins and competitive nature of this Serie B division. As far as Palermo is concerned, their 1-1 draw was their second in succession, their third unbeaten game in a row and their second clean sheet in three. However, more work is needed for the Rosanero to truly trouble the top eight teams, as they have won just three of their last nine encounters. On the upside, their home record has been strong in recent games, having won six and drawn three of their last twelve, losing just three of twenty-four matchups at the Renzo Barbera. They have also been impressive in their recent home meetings with Cagliari, having lost just one of their previous fourteen when hosting them. 

Cagliari claimed a much-needed 3-2 over Perugia at the weekend, putting the visitors back on track after a truly lacklustre spell. To provide some further context, Cagliari had failed to win in their last eight encounters before that, claiming a frustrating five score draws and three losses. Their biggest shortcoming so far in the campaign has been an underwhelming defensive performance throughout the majority of the campaign. Specifically, the visitors have conceded in each of their last ten games, as well as ten of their last twelve on the road. Their away record can also be pinpointed as a weakness, with Cagliari failing to win in each of their last six games away from home. To make matters worse, last year’s win at the Renzo Barbera was their first ever there after thirteen fruitless meetings, having managed though to get on the scoresheet in nine of those.
