Nottingham Forest - Manchester United: Form Analysis

With eight matches left to play, Nottingham Forest find themselves in danger of heading right back out of the Premier League in the very same season they were promoted. Steve Cooper’s men have amassed 27 points thanks to six wins and nine draws, the same record as Everton who edge them out on goal difference. Survival is in their hands and they will know this coming into this match and will hope not to let this crucial advantage slip from their grasp. Forest come into this match without a win in nine straight matches with six of those games ending in defeat. Their recent loss came last time out as they went down 2-0 away to Aston Villa. They have however proved difficult to win against while as hosts and have lost just once in their last five matches at home. Three of those five matches have seen them frustrate their opponents to earn a share of the spoils with the most impressive result being a 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

Manchester United will hope that the same fate that befell their city rivals in Nottingham doesn’t befall them too as they seek to cement their place in the top four. The Red Devils are tied with Newcastle on 56 points but goal difference is what is keeping them in fourth. They have a three-point cushion and a game in hand on their closest challengers and will know how vital a win will be here. They have already defeated Forest three times this season (twice in the League Cup). A clean sweep will be difficult with Forest fighting for their lives this time around but Erik ten Hag’s men have the blueprint. A win will be the perfect response to their disappointing 2-2 draw with Sevilla at home in the Europa League in midweek. United let a two-goal lead slip and will now have to win in the return leg in Spain to secure their place in the semifinals. United haven’t had the easiest of times on their travels lately and have won just one of their last four away matches and lost 2-0 to Newcastle last time out on the road.

Nottingham Forest & Manchester United Squad Analysis

Brennan Johnson has scored eight of the 24 goals Forest have scored this season and will once again be looked upon to provide the outlet on Sunday. The Welshman has scored three of Forests’ last six goals. Taiwo Awoniyi, scorer of four league goals, is another player who could pop up with the answers against United. Steve Cooper has a long list of casualties with Cheik Kouyate and Moussa Niakhate the latest players to head into the treatment room after the game against Villa and will therefore be out of this weekend’s match.

Manchester United haven’t been spared from injuries either and could be forced to pair their third and fourth options in central defence for this match following injuries to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez in the game against Sevilla. Luke Shaw is also out with a thigh injury and joins another starter, Marcus Rashford, in the treatment room. Rashford, who has been key to United’s successes this season with 30 goals scored across all competitions, injured his groin against Everton last weekend and is expected to be out for several weeks. In his place against Sevilla came Marcel Sabitzer who netted a brace in the game. The Austrian should keep his place for Sunday’s match. Anthony Martial came from the bench against Everton last time out in the league and should keep his place in the starting squad for a second successive game. The best news for Manchester United fans will be the return of Casemiro from a four-game suspension in domestic action.
