Two promotion hopefuls clash in the Championship this weekend when Nottingham Forest host Leeds. For those of you who have not been following the ups and downs of the English second tier, there is still time to enjoy the drama of the country's best league. It's hardly controversial to write it. The Premier League has a gap of 22 points between the teams in first and second. Nothing remotely similar could ever happen in a league as competitive as the Championship. The top 18 teams are closer than that. Focusing on Forest and Leeds in particular, the gap is four points. Leeds are in the second automatic promotion spot and Forest have a play-off place thanks to their fourth-place position. Despite their lofty positions, both teams lost at the weekend (both suffering their seventh league defeats of the campaign). Forest were beaten by Birmingham, the Blues arguably worthy of three points. The same could not be said for Wigan, who withstood a Leeds siege after going ahead through a bizarre goalkeeper error.
Leeds fans are worried. It's that time of the season when things begin to go wrong for them. They start brilliantly under Bielsa before succumbing to their newfound destiny: To suffer in dramatic fashion. They have lost three of their last four league matches, and another defeat could knock them out of second spot. On the other hand, a positive result could send them top. Leeds were undoubtedly unlucky last weekend (hitting the post, having shots cleared off the line) but also let in a stupid goal. It's luck and it's also mettle. They have to get over a mental block in order to take their chance at promotion. Forest will be keen to pour further misery on their rivals. Unbeaten in four games versus Leeds, they have the quality to extend that run. Back a draw.
