Norwich City have a chance to fight for their Premier League status after the resumption of play and in their first match, they host Southampton. The two sides are separated by 13 points; Norwich at the bottom with 21 and Southampton 14th with 34 points. This game means everything to Norwich, who are six points out of the safety zone and battling to avoid an immediate return to the Championship, they know they have to win. As for Southampton, safety is almost assured, after recovering from a poor start in the season. They are seven points above the drop zone and a mid table target could be realistic for them. Norwich will have an unidentified player unavailable after testing positive for coronavirus but they should have all other players available for this clash save for Sam Byram who is injured. They registered a win over Tottenham in a friendly match and this should be a good boost. In three competitive matches however, Norwich have lost three and won one outright. The other was a post-match penalties win over Tottenham in the FA Cup. They have failed to score in three of the last five matches and kept just one clean sheet. In Premier league action, Norwich have not scored in four of their last five matches. in their last league game, they fought well but still lost 1-0 to Sheffield United, missing the chance to make it two wins in a row after the 1-0 victory over Leicester City. At home, in the last few matches, they have been a different side though, with just one loss in five in the league. Norwich have two wins and two draws in the last five home league games, and have failed to score in just one of the five – against Liverpool. In the last six meetings between the two, Norwich have managed just one win while Southampton have four wins. None of the two has won away from home though and four of the six meetings have yielded over 2.5 goals.

Southampton head to this game on the back of a poor run before the league was halted. They had lost four of the last five matches, with a win over Aston Villa the only positive result to show. They had conceded at least twice in three of the five matches, signifying defensive concerns at the team. Their situation is further complicated by the absence of midfielder Moussa Djenepo in this game as he serves suspension. One positive for Southampton though, is that they have scored in four of their last five matches. Among the bottom eight sides, Southampton have the most wins, which should motivate them here. However, having the second poorest defence in the league should be a concern. Just like Norwich, they have conceded 52 goals, making them only better than Aston Villa. Southampton have two straight losses in away league matches but have four wins in six away matches in the league. They have failed to score in just one of their last 13 away matches and in four of the last six away league games, they have scored two or more goals.
