It’s a battle between last and first from the last season of the Indian Super League as the ISL 2023-24 gets going. This match between NorthEast United and Mumbai City will be played at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, Assam on Sunday. NorthEast United finished last in the previous ISL season with just one win and 17 losses from their 20 matches. After that disappointment, they went ahead and appointed a new coach in Juan Pedro Benali. He has past experience in managing teams in Asia, Africa, and Europe which is expected to lift the NorthEast United side. They have added some crucial names like Ibson Melo, Michael Zabaco and Nestor Albiach as they plot success this season. They made it to the Super Cup semis where they lost to Odisha. Following that, they made it to the semis of the Durand Cup before playing two friendlies against Jamshedpur – losing 1-0 and drawing 2-2.

Mumbai were the standout team from the regular season last year winning the League Winners’ Shield for the second time. They won 14 and drew four matches in the 20 regular season matches, losing only twice. Des Buckingham’s side will look to make amends from the last season when they lost to Bengaluru FC on penalties in the semis. Mumbai had an interesting pre-season where they were drawn in the AFC Champions League Group D alongside Neymar’s Al Hilal. They couldn’t reach the semis of the Super Cup but have topped their group in the Durand Cup. Mumbai lost out to Mohun Bagan in the quarters before playing a friendly and a Champions League opening game. They defeated Prachuap 3-0 but lost 2-0 to Iranian club Nassaji Mazandaran in the AFC Champions League opening game.
