Nigeria - South Africa: Form Analysis
It’s four months to the day since these African powerhouses faced off in the semi-final of the Africa Cup of Nations. On that occasion, both sides ended level in regulation time, but Nigeria ultimately got through via penalty shootouts. The Super Eagles were beaten by the Ivory Coast in the final of that competition, and since then, they have beaten Ghana 2-1 and lost to Mali 2-0 during the international break back in March. At home, Nigeria are unbeaten in their last three games (W2 D1 L0), which included a whopping 6-0 victory over Sao Tome and Principe last September. The Super Eagles played out consecutive 1-1 draws in World Cup qualifying against Lesotho and Zimbabwe last November and trail group leaders Rwanda by four points. They are also unbeaten in their last three matches against this opponent and are clear favourites here, according to the bookmakers.
Meanwhile, South Africa have been one of the most improved sides in Africa over the last couple of years. After claiming third place at the Africa Cup of Nations, they broke into the top 60 teams in the world according to FIFA rankings and are now looking to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since they hosted the grand spectacle back in 2010. During the last AFCON, Bafana Bafana came second in their group behind Mali and reached the semi-final via penalty shootouts against Cape Verde, where goalkeeper Ronwen Williams saved an incredible four of five shots. That loss to Nigeria in the following round remains the only one South Africa have conceded in their last eight games in all competitions, following back-to-back draws against Andorra and Algeria in March. While the visitors are understandably underdogs, they could represent incredible value, based on the long odds they’ve been priced at for this one.

Nigeria & South Africa Squad Analysis
Nigeria have several notable absentees for the next two qualifiers, including Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who is out injured. AC Milan forward Samuel Chukwueze experienced a minor relapse of his thigh injury during the team's training and is a doubt. Team captain Ahmed Musa and defender Kenneth Omeruo have not been called up, and Nathan Tella asked to be excused. Finidi George has called up NPFL stars Kenneth Igboke and Sodiq Ismael, as well as Rizespor midfielder Ibrahim Olawoyin.
Grant Kekana departed the South African training camp this week due to a hamstring injury and has been replaced by Given Msimango of Kaizer Chiefs. Orlando Pirates’ Nkosinathi Sibisi and Siyabonga Ngezana, who recently won his club league with Romanian side FCSB, are also new additions. However, the majority of the Bafana Bafana squad that impressed at the AFCON remains available for Hugo Broos, including Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, Teboho Mokoena, and Al Ahly’s Percy Tau.

Our Nigeria vs South Africa Prediction
While Nigeria have been the dominant side in this fixture in the past, South Africa have made significant strides forward in recent times. A particular improvement noticed by Bafana Bafana has been their defence, which kept five clean sheets in seven AFCON games, and conceded just three goals. We expect the visitors to prioritise the clean sheet here and feel that the first goal could easily end up being the winner. Our Nigeria vs South Africa prediction: Handicap South Africa +2.
