Nigeria vs Libya Prediction & Betting Tips - AFCON
by Devesh Jaganath in AFCON Predictions
Group D in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers will resume this week with Nigeria taking on Libya at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday evening. The Super Eagles are currently leading the group with four points, while the Mediterranean Knights are at the foot of the standings with one point so far. Check out our match prediction below.
These two sides have faced off four times in all competitions in the past, and Nigeria have dominated this fixture, winning each of those matches. The most recent encounter came back in the 2018 AFCON qualifiers and the Super Eagles won home and away, scoring seven goals while only conceding two.
With that in mind, it comes as no surprise to see the hosts massively fancied in this match, and six points across this double-header will put them in a commanding position to secure their spot in Morocco next year. To the key stats!

Nigeria - Libya: Form Analysis
After an agonising loss in the final of AFCON 2023, Nigeria are en route to challenging for the continental title yet again. They are unbeaten in this competition with four points courtesy of a 3-0 win over Benin and a goalless draw against Rwanda.
Those results were needed for the Super Eagles too, after a very poor first two rounds in World Cup qualifying where they were shockingly beaten by the Cheetahs and only managed a point against South Africa.
However, despite their result mixed fortunes, Nigeria have maintained a solid home record, unbeaten in their last four matches on home soil (W2 D2 L0) dating back to March 2023.
Nigeria are one of only seven teams from the 48 participating nations that are yet to concede in this competition!
Meanwhile, Libya’s major problem in this competition has been their inability to see out matches from winning positions.
Against Rwanda in match one, they scored in the 16th minute but were pegged back in the second half to earn a point. On matchday two, they took the lead inside the first 10 minutes, but ended up losing 2-1 owing to two second-half goal concessions.
With those results, the Mediterranean Knights are winless in three and have posted only one win in their last five competitive matches, which was against Mauritius in June.

Nigeria & Libya Squad Analysis
The undoubted biggest blow for the Super Eagles in the build-up to this month’s double-header was the withdrawal of star striker Victor Osimhen, who sustained an injury while playing for Galatasaray against Kasimpasa.
Aside from Osimhen, Orlando Pirates defender Olisa Ndah is also ruled out due to injury. However, Fenerbahce’s Bright Osayi-Samuel who missed last month’s qualifiers with an injury is cleared fit to play.
Augustine Eguavoen will lead Nigeria for a third time in his career!
The Nigerian Football Federation decided to bring back the 59-year-old and part ways with former manager Finidi George after just two games in charge.
As for the Mediterranean Knights, they will be without the services of three notable players in Ahli Tripoli defender Ahmed Al-Tarbi, Mohammed Al-Tabbal and Ali Youssef. All three are sidelined with injuries.
Like their opponents, Libya will also have a new boss in the dugout in Nasser Al-Hadhiri, who replaced now-former Serbian coach Milutin Sredojevic (Micho) ahead of these qualifier matches.

Our Nigeria vs Libya Prediction
Given Nigeria’s record in this competition and against this opponent, they are worthy favourites, but that is not to say that Libya is a poor team. In fact, Libya’s attack has been very impressive over the last year, and we can easily see them getting on the scoresheet against Nigeria’s defence which does tend to concede cheaply every so often.
With that in mind, we do still fancy the Super Eagles to win this match, but we do not think it will be by two clear goals. Our Nigeria vs Libya prediction: Libya +2 European handicap!
