Nigeria vs Benin Prediction & Betting Tips - AFCON
by Devesh Jaganath in AFCON Predictions
African giants Nigeria will kick off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with a battle against Benin at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday evening. The Super Eagles and the Cheetahs are joined in Group D by Rwanda and Libya, who played to a 1-1 draw earlier this week. Let’s get into the match prediction.
Just under three months ago, these two faced off in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier clash in which Benin pulled off an against-the-odds 2-1 victory in neighbouring Ivory Coast. That result has thrown the Super Eagles’ World Cup qualification hopes into major doubt and they will undoubtedly be out to exact their revenge in this match.
Nigeria are considered favourites by a significant margin by bookmakers, but Benin are the side with the momentum, having notched up back-to-back victories in their last two outings. Let’s take a look at some of the other important factors at play here.

Nigeria - Benin: Form Analysis
Abidjan has proven a disappointing hunting ground for the Super Eagles in 2024, as it was at that venue they lost to their upcoming opponent in June and were also beaten in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final by the tournament hosts back in February.
In between those defeats, it has been a mixed bag of results for Nigeria, with a win over Ghana and a loss to Mali in their March friendlies, before drawing 1-1 with arch-rivals South Africa in World Cup qualifying at the start of June.
Notably, the Super Eagles are without a first-team manager after Finidi George resigned following the defeat to the Cheetahs in June!
Meanwhile, Benin are setting off on their journey to return to Africa’s premier cup competition for the first time since the 2018-19 campaign, when they managed to reach the quarter-final stage before bowing out to Senegal.
Ranked 91st in the world and 13 places behind Nigeria in the CAF region, the Cheetahs' record over recent years has perhaps unsurprisingly been fairly underwhelming, with just three wins posted in their last 17 matches dating back to the start of 2022 (W3 D6 L8).
However, two of those victories came in their last two matches against Rwanda (1-0) and Nigeria (2-1) in June, and the side have now lost only one of their last five in all competitions. Both those victories were at home, though, while the Cheetahs are winless in their last seven away games, losing four and drawing three.

Nigeria & Benin Squad Analysis
Augustine Eguavoen will lead Nigeria on an interim basis this month, but he will be without the services of Fenerbahce defender Bright Osayi-Samuel due to injury, with Crawley Town’s Benjamin Tanimu being brought in as his replacement.
Despite Osayi-Samuel’s absence, the Super Eagles squad is bursting with talent, with the likes of William Troost-Ekong, Ademola Lookman and Taiwo Awoniyi all fit and available for selection.
Reigning African Footballer of the Year Victor Osimhen is a minor doubt having arrived late at the Super Eagles training camp!
Genort Rohr has selected 25 players to make the trip to Uyo this week with Jodel Dossou and Steve Mounie, who scored Benin’s goals in the previous match between these sides, headlining the list.
The German tactician has also called up two first-timers in Coton FC’s Bachirou Sika and Samadou Attidjikou of Bani Ganse FC, both of whom will be hoping to earn their first cap for the Cheetahs this month

Our Nigeria vs Benin Prediction
While Nigeria are rightfully installed as favourites here, it is somewhat surprising to see just how heavily fancied they are, given their performances in the lead-up to this competition.
Benin, while still considered relative minnows in the CAF region, showed that they are a side that can show up on their day when these two faced off in June, and we feel that they will be able to at least get on the scoresheet in this one. Our Nigeria vs Benin prediction: Both teams to score!
Nigeria vs Benin - Other Interesting Predictions
Benin +2
Benin have only lost one of their last five matches. Additionally, the Cheetahs have not lost by two clear goals in any of their last 13 matches in all competitions.
