Newcastle United blew a big chance to move further away from the relegation region in their last game and now as they host Tottenham Hotspur that will be a key target. They go to this game placed 17th in the standings with 28 points, and Spurs are 20 points ahead, at 48 and in sixth place. Newcastle have no win in their last six matches, and whereas they had 18 points to fight for in that run, they’ve managed just six. However, they’ve scored in seven of their last 10 matches and will be looking at this as a motivation. Jamal Lascelles has scored two of their last three goals in the past five matches and Allan Saint-Maximin who has scored the other is a major doubt for this game. The Magpies have generally had a poor season, and heading to this game they have 10 losses and two clean sheets in 15 matches. Right before the international break, they lost 3-0 to Brighton, a result that left them just two points above the relegation zone. At home, Newcastle United have managed just four wins in their 14 league matches. Apart from Saint Maximin the team will also be without Callum Wilson, Fabian Schar and Isaac Hayden who are injured.

Tottenham rose from their recent slump with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa in their last match before the international break. That coming after a loss in the London derby and elimination from the Europa League attracted really little celebration but they’ll be at St. James Park hoping to keep their European hopes alive. In league action, Spurs have registered four wins in five, scored in each and kept three clean sheets in the five matches. They have just three wins in the last 11 away league matches and have suffered four losses in the last six. Once again, Harry Kane will be a key man for Spurs, after scoring in the Villa game as well as having a fine run out in the international week with England. However, his partner, with whom they’ve destroyed defences, Son Heung-min, is unavailable with injury.
