Newcastle United will hope to make their home form count as the Premier League top-four race sees them battle Tottenham Hotspur at St. James’ Park on Sunday. The hosts are 4th in the Premier League standings ahead of this round with a three-point lead over Tottenham in 5th who have also played a game extra. Newcastle can momentarily go above Manchester United to 3rd if they can win this match. That would be an apt way of bouncing back from a 3-0 loss to Aston Villa last weekend that has halted their five-game winning run in the Premier League. It was also their worst losing margin of the season, an apt indicator of how good they have been defensively. The Magpies have been the best defensive unit of the Premier League with only 24 goals conceded and that loss at Villa won’t make them bad overnight. Newcastle will hope to get back to winning ways here as they have won seven of their last ten home league matches, losing just once.

Tottenham are also coming off a loss, when they were beaten 3-2 by Bournemouth in the last round complicating their top-four chances. They still can go level on points with Newcastle with a win, but that would need them defy their poor recent form. Spurs have won only two of their last six Premier League matches, drawing and losing two each – a stark indicator of how inconsistent their form has been. They even lost the reverse fixture 2-1, although to their credit they have defeated Newcastle in two prior matches. It is their away form this season that has been a big concern as Tottenham have failed to win any of their last six matches in all competitions – drawing two and losing four.
