Newcastle United have so far been shaky and will be hoping for a better showing when they host Southampton. Going to this game Newcastle have 22 points and are placed 16th while Southampton have 29 points, in 12th place. Both these sides have had poor outings in recent matches. Newcastle are coming from a 2-1 home loss to Crystal Palace, having let go of an early lead. They have won just once in the last 13 matches and have three clean sheets in the last 15 matches. In terms of defence, Newcastle are the second-poorest in the league after West Bromwich Albion, having conceded 36 goals so far. At home, they have three straight losses in the league and had drawn the earlier two, leaving them winless in five. However, Newcastle have scored in each of the last three home league matches.

Southampton carry to this game the shame of having lost 9-0 to Manchester United in the last game. In terms of confidence they will be so low, and will not have Alex Jankewitz and Jan Bednarek available after getting sent off in the last game. The heavy defeat at Old Trafford was Southampton’s third in a row though in the league they have lost four straight. They have also failed to score in the last three matches. Defensively, they’ve been so poor, having conceded 15 goals in the last four league matches. At some point, the Saints had a very prolific attack but here they go with just two goals in the last eight league matches. The low returns in attack have also left the team with one win in nine league matches. They last scored more than one goal in a game in mid December, when they beat Sheffield United 3-0. That remains the only match in the last 10 league games that they have scored more than a goal. Southampton are winless in the last four away matches in the league, and failed to score in the last three. They have just one clean sheet in eight away league matches – the 0-0 draw with Fulham on Boxing Day.
