Newcastle United had a tremendous rise in the second half of last season in the Premier League and they will be targeting a strong start this season. Their opening league match will be at home, against newly promoted Nottingham Forest. The home team has had a good preseason, registering four wins in six matches and most crucially, they finished with two straight wins, against Athletic Bilbao and Atalanta. Nottingham Forest managed just two wins in their seven preseason matches and they don’t carry to this game a strong run. They finished with three straight outings without a win. While Newcastle’s focus for the season will be at least a top half finish, Nottingham Forest, after 23 years out of the Premier League, are expected to target just staying up. It has been a busy summer for Nottingham Forest as far as transfers are concerned and all will be curious to see how this all adds up.

Miguel Almiron has been in top form for club and country during the preseason. It hasn’t been really great for him in the past few seasons but after scoring six times in preseason, he may have earned himself a starting berth here. Goalkeeper Nick Pope is among the top additions at Newcastle and he, along with another new arrival Sven Botman will be expected to solidify the team defensively. Nottingham Forest have a number of players coming in too, and eager to prove their worth, including Jesse Lingard and loanee Dean Henderson. Taiwo Awoniyi, their most expensive acquisition this summer, will be expected to command a starting berth after the club splashed £17.5m to take him from Union Berlin.

Nottingham Forest have a new look team; their rebuild after promotion has seen at least 19 players released, including eight that were in the promotion playoff final, and at least 12 new faces have been brought in, most with topflight experience. The quality of the squad is definitely high but the question remains if they will be able to gel and perform as early as in the opening game. Newcastle are a more stable side; they have new additions, but their rebuild started much earlier. They only need to carry on with the momentum from last season, and they’ve had a strong run in preseason too. That will be the difference in this game, and is the reason we are backing Newcastle to win.
