Newcastle United’s top-four ambitions could probably see a decisive shift when they take on Liverpool at St. James Park in the Premier League on Saturday. The hosts are 4th in the standings ahead of this round with 41 points from 22 matches while the visitors are 9th with 32 points from 21 matches. Newcastle have been impressing everyone with their top-four pursuit losing just once in the league campaign, while every other club has lost at least thrice. The Magpies are coming off a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth which is part of five draws across their last six matches. Eddie Howe’s side would see this as a lost chance to cement their spot in the top-two. Instead, they start five points behind third-placed Manchester United albeit with a game in hand. It is their impressive defensive record that is leading their top-four ambitions as Newcastle have conceded just 13 league goals, the best this season. Even at this venue, they have conceded only one goal across their last six league matches which incidentally came in their last match here.

Yet, with three defeats and one draw from their last five league matches Liverpool are far from expectations in the top-four race. They start this round nine points from top-four although playing two games lesser than Newcastle, and three points behind sixth-placed Brighton. Despite their struggles to close out matches, Liverpool have netted 36 league goals this season which is bettered only by five clubs. Mohammed Salah’s poor form has been a reason for those poor numbers, but with the striker scoring in their last match there could be hope to see that change. His form would be crucial if Liverpool are to break their poor form, having lost three successive away matches in the Premier League.
