Newcastle United’s poor run continued on Saturday, with a 2-0 loss at Aston Villa, and they next play host to Leeds United, who have also struggled lately. The home team is placed 16th on 19 points and Leeds United 12th on 23 points. The loss to Villa was Newcastle’s fifth straight, and it also completed a run of 10 matches without a win. They have just one clean sheet in the last 10 matches and failed to score in four of the last five. In the last 17 matches, the Magpies have three wins while they have conceded 10 goals in the last five matches. This run has left manager Steve Bruce under immense pressure and a poor attack, that has delivered just one goal in eight matches hasn’t helped. After a run of four straight away matches, Newcastle will be hoping for a lift at home. It hasn’t been better for them there though. They have no win in the last three home matches and their only win in five games there came against 19th placed West Bromwich Albion.

In the earlier meeting this season, Leeds thrashed Newcastle 5-2. Ahead of this game, the visitors are also having their struggles, with three straight losses and no goals in the three matches. They have conceded two or more in six of the last 10 matches and have just three clean sheets. In terms of defence, Leeds are the second poorest after West Brom, having conceded 34 goals. In the last five league matches they have three losses, the most recent coming against the struggling Brighton. League games away from home have also not brought a lot of smiles for Leeds; they have lost three of the last four, and conceded three or more in the losses. A portion of the blame for their dip in form would be on Patrick Bamford’s form. The striker, who has hit 10 league goals this season, has had a dry spell for the last four games and Leeds are suffering.
