Matchday five in the English Premier League will see Newcastle United take on Brentford at St. James' Park on Saturday. The hosts are currently in 14th place in the league standings after four matches, while the visitors are eighth. Newcastle had an incredible 2022-23 season which saw them return to UCL for the first time in 20 years. However, things have not gone according to plan as yet this term. They came into this match following a 3-1 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend. That was their third consecutive loss in the league following defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City in their two previous matches. Their only points so far came in their opening match when they beat Aston Villa 5-1. While the results have been underwhelming, we have to consider that the Magpies had a wretched run of fixtures over the opening weeks. 

Meanwhile, Brentford have made a very promising start to the campaign and will be hoping to pull closer to the top six in the coming weeks. The Bees played out a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth last week, which kept their unbeaten record this season intact. The visitors began the league campaign with a 2-2 draw against Spurs and a 3-0 win over Fulham before two consecutive draws. That leaves them on six points so far and four behind the top four teams in the league standings. Brentford finished ninth last season, though they only managed to take 22 points from a possible 57 on the road. They also failed to beat Newcastle United in their last six attempts, losing five and drawing one.
