Newcastle United host Aston Villa in the Premier League on Wednesday. The Magpies are 12th in the table, 11 points clear of the relegation zone and, interestingly, only eight off a Champions League spot. Villa, 19th in the table, continue their battle to climb out of the relegation zone. They are only a point away from safety and a win could take them as high as 16th. While Villa won the reverse fixture 2-0 late last year, they have been out of the winning habit for some time. They have failed to win their last six Premier League matches, losing five of those fixtures. Villa Park has been a relative fortress for Dean Smith's team and their away form pales in comparison. Villa have failed to win 13 of their 15 away matches in the Premier League this season. They face a Newcastle team in a rich vein of form at St. James's Park, unbeaten in their last four home matches, two of which resulted in wins. Everything went right for Newcastle in their recent 3-0 win over Sheffield United. Steve Bruce's side took full advantage of their opponents being reduced to ten men and even helped Joelinton to score his first home goal in the Premier League, albeit in front of empty stands.

Games between Newcastle and Villa are typically low-scoring affairs. The last six meetings between the sides featured two goals or fewer. Although Newcastle enjoyed a big weekend win, that was an anomaly in their season. They have only scored two or more goals in six of their 30 games this season.
