It was all looking a bit bleak for Newcastle a few weeks ago, especially after a terrible 5-1 loss at Crystal Palace. With many calling for manager Steve McLaren to be sacked, Newcastle bounced back with a 2-0 home win over Liverpool and a 2-1 defeat of Spurs away from home. That's taken them out of the relegation zone and this game against Villa gives them a chance to really get some momentum going. Aston Villa would love to have the results Newcastle have had in recent weeks. They did get a 1-1 draw at Southampton which for Villa is almost like winning a trophy at present. Then last week they put in another dreadful home performance and lost 2-0 at home to Arsenal. That leaves them stranded at the bottom six points behind Sunderland and eight points away from safety, virtually nine because of their terrible goal difference. Villa just seem to have no answers to their problems at present and they're entering a vital stage of their season. After this game against Newcastle they play West Ham and then fellow strugglers Norwich and Sunderland. They simply have to start picking up points or relegation will be a certainty. I don't see that recovery starting this weekend and Newcastle can get another good win.
