There’s literally no time for Arsenal to recover; after their defeat to Villarreal in Spain in the Europa League semi final on Thursday, they have another away game, on Sunday against Newcastle United. Going to this game, 16th placed Newcastle United have been in great form and at 36 points, they’ve opened up a nine-point gap from the bottom three. Arsenal, meanwhile have been dropping, and find themselves in 10th place on 46 points going to this game. Newcastle are coming from a 1-1 draw with Liverpool, their fourth straight unbeaten outing. They’ve won two of the four matches and Joe Willock, on loan from Arsenal has been a crucial player in Newcastle’s survival race, with three goals in the four matches, all point-winning goals. Willock will however miss this game as per his loan terms. In their last eight matches, Newcastle have lost just once and will want to take advantage of Arsenal’s focus on Europe at this moment. They have no clean sheet in the last five matches but at this point in time, the Magpies will do with outscoring the opponent as they look to rise farther from the relegation zone. They haven’t lost at home too, with two wins sandwiching three draws in the league. They have scored two or more goals in three of the five home matches and in the last 10 home league matches, they’ve failed to score in just one game.

Arsenal are coming from another disappointing outing, which ended in a 2-1 loss to Villarreal in the Europa League semi final. The Gunners have now suffered two straight losses and are winless in the last three matches. Arsenal aren’t likely to finish in the Europa League position in the standings, which may mean most of the attention at the moment is on winning the Europa League this season. That will work well for Newcastle, who would want to take advantage of this distraction. The Gunners have one win in five league matches and that came against the weakest team in the league – Sheffield United. The 3-0 win then remains their only clean sheet in five league matches. It has been a bit better away from home; Mikel Arteta’s side goes there unbeaten in four away matches, with two wins and having scored three goals in three. Kieran Tierney and Alexander Lacazette, two very influential players at Arsenal are out with injury but skipper Pierre Emerick Aubameyang could start after his late introduction in the Villarreal game.
