New Zealand W - Norway W: Form Analysis
New Zealand are co-hosting this year’s tournament together with Australia. They will definitely want to make home advantage count, also seeking to finally win a match at the World Cup. The Football Ferns have played 15 matches across five editions and have been defeated 12 times. They arrive for this match struggling for form as they have won only once in their last 12 fixtures. Jitka Klimkova’s charges have tasted defeat nine times in this period. Having been assured qualification for the tournament, New Zealand have been playing build-up matches since last year. The latest being a 1-0 loss to Italy last Friday. Scoring goals has been the Island nation’s Achilles heel. They have scored only four times in their last 12 outings. New Zealand are the second-best-ranked nation in Group A and are ranked 26th in the world.
Norway arrive for this tournament struggling for form as well. But having defeated New Zealand in three of their last four meetings, they will be confident of starting off with a win here. Hege Riise’s charges will however need to be at their very best to achieve this. Norway have not won in their last four matches. To make matters worse, they have not played a match in three months. The one-time world champions last played a match in April, a build-up fixture with Sweden that ended 3-3. They have won once in the five matches they have played this year. The Grasshoppers have failed to qualify from the group stages once and have twice made it to the final. They are ranked 12th in the FIFA World Rankings.
