New York City are third in the Eastern Conference four points behind league leaders Atlanta United but only a point behind their opponents, second-placed New York Red Bulls  The top two automatically go into the quarter-finals so a win here is vital for City and defeat would probably end their title hopes. New York City have the best home record in the Eastern Conference with ten wins and two draws from their 12 games with 29 goals scored and only six conceded. They are on an unbeaten run of 15 league games at home and only one defeat in the last 26. City have already beaten Red Bulls once at home this season, a 1-0 win last month, that's their third straight home win over them since they lost 7-0 to them in May 2016. 

Their opponents are chasing the conference title being just three points behind Atlanta United. They have the second-best away record in the Eastern Conference but have still lost four times on the road. Their only loss in the last six away league games was to New York City  Since that defeat they have had two away wins and then drew 2-2 with Vancouver Whitecaps needing a 90th minute goal to rescue a point despite taking the lead after just five minutes. Go for a home win in this game that will see City climb above their rivals into second place.
