The writing was on the wall for the Netherlands even before they began their game against Belarus on Saturday. Second placed Sweden had hammered Luxembourg 8-0 at home and that took their goal difference miles clear of the Dutch. A big win was needed in Belarus but the Netherlands could only win 2-1 and now they are three points behind the Swedes but have a goal difference of 7 compared to Sweden's 19. A win by a seven goal margin is the target for the Dutch but their opponents have only conceded seven goals in their nine qualifiers to date. The Netherlands will give it a go because they have no option but that's likely to create an open game in which both teams will score. The Dutch have won three of their four home game scoring 12 goals but crucially lost home and away to France. That home defeat to France is their only loss in 22 home World Cup qualifiers but are too inconsistent to back. Sweden aren't brilliant away from home and have lost to both France and Bulgaria but no way will they allow themselves to suffer a massive defeat. Go for both teams to score and then just wonder what the Dutch will do after missing out on another big tournament finals.
