Netherlands vs Croatia Prediction & Betting Tips - UEFA Nations League
by Steve Ashfield | in UEFA Nations League Predictions
The Netherlands bid to reach the final of the UEFA Nations League for the second time. The first semi-final sees them take on Croatia at the De Kulp in Rotterdam on Wednesday June 12th, 2023. The winners of this match will face either Spain or Italy in the final on Sunday June 18th. Those two sides meet in the other semi-final the day after this match. The Nations League seems to have gone a bit under the radar. There's been so much interest in the climaz of the domestic leagues and the three European finals. It's still an important tournament though and one all four remaining countries will want to win. The Netherlands lost in the first ever Nations League final and with them hosting this time will be hard to beat. The Flying Dutchmen topped their qualifying group and finished six points ahead of Belgium. They beat the Belgians home and away and that includes an impressive 4-1 win in Belgium. The Dutch side had a tough time in the 2010s with failure to qualify for major finals. Winning this Nations League would really see them back on the centre stage of European football.
Croatia weren't expected to reach the latter stages of this competition fter being drawn against both defending champions France and Denmark. They proved their critics wrong by ending the group a point ahead of the Danes and eight clear of France. They will be hoping to continue that good form in the finals. Last December saw them finish third in the 2022 World Cup, the second highest finish by a European country in that tournament. They haven't quite matched their World Cup success (they were runners-up in 2018) in European competitions but they hope that will change in these Nations League finals.

Netherlands - Croatia: Form Analysis
Over 90 minutes the Netherlands have only lost one of their last 22 matches. That was in a Euro 2024 qualifier away to France in March. They lost that match 4-0 but bounced back with a 3-0 home win over Gibraltar. The French loss was a bad one though and may give Croatia some confidence of doing well. With the Netherlands having home advantage though, the Croatians have a tough job on their hands. The end of 2022 saw the Netherland defeated in the World Cup quarter finals by eventual winners Argentina. It took a penalty shoot out for the Oranje to be eliminated. In the Nations League they were highly impressive in the group stages. They won five and drew one of their six matches and earned seven points out of nine at home. The only game they didn't win was a 2-2 home draw with Poland. They managed to do the double over Belgium including a stunning 4-1 away victory. The Netherlands are unbeaten in their last ten Nations League matches and will hope to go one better than when losing the final to Portugal in 2019. They are bidding to become the second hosts to win the tournament after Portugal achieved that feat in the first ever Nations League.
Croatia finished third in the 2022 World Cup finals. That was an excellent follow-up after being the losing finalists in 2018. The Croatians were also beaten by Argentina going down 3-0 in the last four. They then secured third place with a 2-1 win over Morocco. Croatia haven't always had the best of times in the Nations League. The first two tournaments saw them finish third in their group, missing out on the finals but avoiding relegation to League B. It's been a different story this time though and they won their group ahead of Denmark and France. They won the group despite only winning one of their three home games. All three of their away fixtures were won and that included beating both Denmark and France. The World Cup loss to Argentina is the only defeat they have suffered in their last 15 matches. Seven of their last ten internationals have seen under 2.5 goals scored in them.

Netherlands & Croatia Squad Analysis
Memphis Depay will be absent for this Nations League semi-final against Croatia. He's not played since early May due to a calf injury and hasn't recovered in time for this game. Daley Blind and Tijiana Reijnders have been left out of the final Dutch squad. The good news is that Cody Gapko is fit and will be hoping to replicate the good form he showed in the 2022 World Cup finals.
Croatia are also without a key player. Centre-back Josko Gvardiol has a groin injury and strikerr Marko Livaja won't be playing. They will be relying on Andrej Kramaric for some Nations Leagues goals. Ivan Perisic will be playing and he is just one goal short of becoming the second-highest scorer for the Croatian national team. Still playing is Luka Modric who will be earning his 165th cap for Croatia if selected to play against the Netherlands.
