Liverpool make their first step in the defence of their Champions League crown on Tuesday night. The Reds are away in Naples, a ground where they lost last term on their way to European success. They come into this clash looking to pull off a result after a fine start to their Premier League campaign, but how will they fare when they face their toughest test of the season so far? Napoli can look back on a solid campaign domestically so far, with two wins in three. They lost out 4-3 in a trip to Juventus, but otherwise, the Partenopei have been in fine form. They want to build on their second-place finish in the league last term, while there’s room for them to kick on in the Champions League. Last term brought a group stage exit, something Liverpool played a key role in. The Reds came through one of the toughest groups in the competition last term on route to glory. That jeopardy isn’t quite there this time around. Last term these two were rivalled by PSG and Red Star, this time around it’s Red Bull Salzburg and Genk. These two look set for a place in the last 16, but which of the duo will get off to the perfect start? Liverpool are the favourites for this clash, with the Reds slightly boosted by their tag of European champions. While the visitors have made a brilliant Premier League start, they’ve clashed with the likes of Newcastle, Burnley and Norwich so far. Not even Arsenal – by far their hardest test – can really match up to the prospect of a visit to the San Paolo. Napoli have won five of their last seven at home in this competition, while they were particularly effective last term. The Reds lost here 1-0 when they met in Naples, while the Partenopei played PSG off the park in both meetings between the two. On the other hand, Liverpool lost all three of their away trips in the group stage. They have lost six of their last eight Champions League trips, which makes us think that Napoli are overpriced.
