As the Italian Super Cup extends to four teams from the traditional one-off match, Napoli and Fiorentina carry their hopes to the Middle East. This match to be played at the Al-Awwal Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Thursday will be the first semi-final of this competition. The winner of this tie will progress to face the winner of the other semi-final between Inter Milan and Lazio. Napoli qualified for this tournament as the defending Scudetto champions, but their recent league form has been very poor. They find themselves out of top-four in the Serie A standings and face an uphill battle there. Napoli have won this competition two times before and will hope for a turnaround of fortunes, although the last time they won this was back a decade ago. That said, a run of six defeats across their last ten competitive matches throws questions over their chances.

Fiorentina have won this tournament only once, back in 1996, so this is a great chance to add to that count. The Viola are in top-four of Serie A and are enjoying a good season, holding high hopes of finishing in the Champions League qualification spots. Recent form also augurs well, as they lost just once across their last 11 competitive matches – seven wins and three draws completing that sequence. They have even won once earlier in the season against Napoli, a 3-1 win in Naples. Replicating that win, at least on current form, looks a possibility although they could adopt a safety-first approach and close out Napoli’s chances.
