Senegal look set to secure an early slot to the 2024 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), as they prepare for their return match against Mozambique away in Maputo in Group L. Senegal leads this group with nine points from their opening three matches while Mozambique are second on four points. Hosts Mozambique are reeling from a 5-1 thrashing in Senegal and will hope for a scoop at home. For Mozambique that was a third straight defeat and they will want to have another look at their defending, having conceded 11 goals in just their last four matches. They do have one clean sheet in the last five matches and three of their five games have produced over 2.5 goals. It hasn’t been great though in AFCON qualification for the Mozambicans, winning just once in their last eight matches in the competition.

Senegal are going through a period of dominance in African football; three of their national teams are current champions in Africa and they will ride on this moment as much as they can. The confidence levels at the team are high and after their first leg win it is highly unlikely their morale will not be high coming into this game. A win here will secure Senegal a slot to the finals, to defend their title. In 23 matches in AFCON qualifiers, Senegal haven’t tasted defeat. The last time they lost a game in this competition was in 2014, against Tunisia. They have three straight wins in this group and only drew twice in the last 10. Their away run is also impressive, with seven clean sheets in 10 AFCON qualification matches.
