Morocco vs Spain Prediction & Betting Tips - World Cup
by Joseph King | in World Cup Predictions
Spain face off against Morocco at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan for this round of 16 matchup in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Morocco advance to the knockout stages for just the second time in their nation’s history and first since Italy 1986. A victory would result in their most successful ever World Cup as the Atlas Lions have never made it past this stage before. They’ll have a tough test in the form of Spain, who are one of the tournament favorites. Spain make the round of 16 for the fifth time in the last six iterations of the World Cup, although haven’t made the quarterfinals since they were crowned champions in South Africa 2010. La Furia Roja were dumped out of the previous iteration of the tournament by the host nation in 2018 when they lost to Russia on penalties in Moscow.

Morocco - Spain: Form Analysis
Spain finished second in Group E with one win, one draw and one defeat in what was overall a very bizarre group. The Spaniards lost to Japan on the final matchday 2-1 after leading by a goal early on to miss out on the top spot in the group. However, it looks to have worked out in Spain’s favor as they will now avoid a potential matchup with Brazil in the quarter finals and Argentina in the semi finals. Spain have shown flashes this tournament of why they are legitimate contenders to lift the trophy, namely their 7-0 thrashing of Costa Rica in the opening round. Since then, however, the performances from Luis Enrique’s men have been a mixed bag. They drew 1-1 with Germany in what was a very close match all around and then surprisingly lost to Japan.
On the other side, Morocco have been one of the most impressive teams of the tournament so far after topping a tricky Group F with wins over Canada and Belgium as well as a draw to Croatia. The defense has led the way for the Atlas Lions in this competition as they have kept two clean sheets and only conceded a single goal so far. This is a talented group of players with a number of their starting 11 all playing in some of Europe’s top leagues. Manager Walid Regragui will certainly feel his team can spring another surprise as they have grown accustomed to playing the underdog role in this tournament.

Morocco & Spain Squad Analysis
There are no injury concerns to worry about in the Spain squad for this round of 16 matchup. We’re likely to see Luis Enrique make some changes to the starting 11 that faced off against Japan as five changes were made for that match. Expect Jordi Alba and Dani Carvajal to be reinstated in the starting 11, as well as Ferran Torres on the right wing. It will be interesting to see if Enrique opts to start Alvaro Morata, who has scored in every group stage match despite making a substitute appearance in two of the three.
Walid Regragui will also be able to call upon his full Morocco squad for the clash against Spain. It would be a surprise to see much alteration in the starting 11 as the manager has kept things relatively consistent with his team sheet this competition. Selim Amallah could retain his spot in the midfield three after starting the first two matches but coming in off the bench for Abdelhamid Sabiri in the final match against Canada.

Our Morocco vs Spain Prediction
We’re going to back goals in this encounter and take over 2.5 goals as our pick for this match. Spain have looked like one of the best attacking teams in the world going forward at times but have also looked extremely vulnerable on the defensive side. Morocco have the pieces to exploit this Spanish side on the counter attack through players such as Ziyech, Hakimi and En-Nesyri. The Atlas Lions will face their biggest test of the tournament against Spain's wide array of gifted technical players. Bet on goals here and take over 2.5 which presents some definite value at its current price of better than even money.
