Morocco - South Africa: Form Analysis

Morocco are heavy favourites to emerge winners at the end of this tournament. The one-time African champions, who triumphed in 1976, have qualified for the knockout round for the 10th time. They qualified as winners of Group F with seven points. Walid Regragoui’s men began the competition with a dominant 3-0 victory over Tanzania. DR Congo, who finished second in Group F, would hold them to a 1-1 draw on matchday two. But they were back to their winning ways in their final group match as a slightly changed team defeated Zambia 1-0. The Atlas Lions haven’t lost any of their last eight matches and have won six times. This should have them confident of progressing here. Morocco defeated South Africa the last time both nations met at the AFCON. This was in the group stage of the 2019 edition.

South Africa defeated Morocco the last time they met. This was last year in their final qualifying match for this tournament. They won 2-1 at home. This ended a run of five games without a win against the North Africans. Three of those matches however had ended in a share of the spoils. Bafana Bafana have twice defeated Morocco at the Cup of Nations. One of those victories, in 1998, came in the quarterfinals on their way to finishing as runners-up. The 1996 African champions, who are back at the continental stage after missing the 2021 edition, finished second in Group E. They amassed four points and edged out Namibia on goal difference. South Africa began the tournament with a 2-0 defeat to group winners Mali. Needing to win their next match to avoid early elimination, Hugo Broos’ men delivered against their COSAFA neighbours, Namibia. They won 4-0 and then followed that up with another clean sheet as they drew 0-0 with Tunisia. South Africa have found it hard to win games and in their last 10 outings have registered just three victories.

Morocco & South Africa Squad Analysis

Morocco’s Walid Regragoui will be back on the touchline for this match after his four-game suspension was scrapped by CAF. The tactician was in the stands for his team’s last group match which was against Zambia. An altercation with DR Congo’s Chancel Mbemba on Match Day 1 resulted in the ban. While this is good news, it is overshadowed by the possibility that Hakim Ziyech could miss this match. Ziyech was withdrawn early in the second half against Zambia with an ankle injury. He scored the winner just moments before he was withdrawn. Ziyech has been one of Morocco’s bright sparks at the tournament and has also provided one assist. If he is to be sidelined, Abdessamad Ezzalzouli could return to the starting lineup. Youssef En-Nesyri was rested against Zambia and is expected to reassume his place at the tip of the attack. Azzedine Ounahi and Ashraf Hakim are others to look out for here. All five of Morocco’s goals have been scored by five different players.

South Africa are also sweating on the fitness of two players. Khuliso Mudau was withdrawn with an ankle injury against Tunisia while Mothobi Mvala finished the aforementioned game with discomfort. The two have been pivotal at the back for Bafana Bafana and before the Tunisia game had played every minute in Ivory Coast. Themba Zwane has scored twice already at the AFCON. He should again be one of the dangermen for South Africa alongside Percy Tau, Evidence Makgopa, and Thapelo Morena. Zakhele Lepasa scored the winner against Morocco the last time the two nations met. The Orland Pirates forward has made an appearance from the bench in all three of South Africa’s matches at the AFCON. He has looked lively and could be given more than a cameo here.

Our Morocco vs South Africa Prediction

Our prediction for Morocco v South Africa is for both teams to score. Morocco are an excellent attacking team and have rarely failed to score in their most recent outings. South Africa are an inconsistent attacking team. But they have shown at the AFCON that on a good day, they are one of the best attacking teams in the continent. With a quarterfinal at stake here, an attack-oriented match should be expected from both teams.
