Morocco vs Portugal Prediction & Betting Tips - World Cup

by Daniel Ngulu | in World Cup Predictions

The 2022 World Cup giant killers Morocco are set for another sojourn against another bigwig in the competition. The North African nation is set to square off with former European champions Portugal in the third quarter final at the 2022 World Cup. The match is scheduled for Saturday 10th December at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha, starting 15:00 GMT. To get to the last eight Morocco had to see off Spain on post match penalties, after earlier defying odds to top a group that had Croatia, Belgium and Canada.

Morocco - Portugal: Form Analysis

Morocco have their tag well in place as the tournament’s giant killers. Backed to struggle in a Group F that had the 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia, high ranking and star-studded Belgium, as well as Canada, the Atlas Lions finished top after wins over Belgium and Canada and a draw with Croatia. As if that was not a great run already, they held Spain to a 0-0 draw before dispatching the former world champions 3-0 on post-match penalties. Morocco are also coming into this game as the side with the meanest defence among the teams still in the competition, having conceded just one goal so far, and this happens to be one of the biggest qualities Portugal will have to deal with apart from the explosive attacking flanks Morocco use when on the counter. Morocco have three clean sheets in their four matches at this competition and they’ve scored two goals in two of the four matches. Their win over Spain marked a ninth unbeaten outing, with seven clean sheets and they are now undefeated in five World Cup matches. This will be the third meeting with Portugal at a FIFA World Cup and they’ve lost one and won one. In their meeting at Russia 2018, they lost 1-0 to Portugal courtesy of a Cristiano Ronaldo strike early in the match. Portugal, seeking a second straight win over Morocco, will be well aware of the Africa nation’s giant killing attributes. They do come here as the best scoring side among the remaining teams, and a 6-1 thrashing of Switzerland in their last game says all about their quality in attack. While they’ve managed just one clean sheet in their four matches at this competition, Portugal have scored two or more in three of the four matches and as such three of their four games have produced over 2.5 goals. They’ve scored in all their four matches but also conceded twice in two of the four games. Their huge win over Switzerland was a great response to their 2-1 loss to South Korea in their final group game and with seven wins in their last 10 matches, Portugal will be confident of going past the Moroccans’ challenge.

Morocco & Portugal Squad Analysis

Walid Regragui, the Morocco manager, will have a few worries in his selection for this game after the massive win over Spain. Romain Saiss seemed to be having hamstring discomfort in the game against Spain and had to be checked though he played on. The team will not want an injury of such magnitude at the moment. As they grapple with that, Morocco could be without West Ham United defender Nayef Aguerd, who sustained a groin injury in the first half of the Spain game though he pushed on to the latter stages of the second half. Still in defence, Bayern Munich man Noussair Mazraoui could be a doubt after seeming injured as he walked off substituted in the 82nd minute of the Spain game. With these three defensive players all in doubt, Morocco’s defensive play may be affected but the manager will be happy to have the workaholic Sofyan Amrabat in the midfield as well as Hakim Ziyech on the flank and the impressive Achraf Hakimi in the defence. Portugal on the other hand, will be without Nuno Mendes for this game. He has been ruled out of the remainder of this World Cup with a thigh injury and there remains a likelihood he will be joined in the sidelines by Danilo Pereira. Danilo missed the Switzerland game with injury and not much has been reported about him ahead of this game so it remains likely he will miss. Meanwhile, Portugal manager Fernando Santos struck gold in the last game, starting youngster Goncalo Ramos in place of Cristiano Ronaldo and he went on to grab a hat trick in the 6-1 win. It is expected the Benfica forward will keep his place in this game.

Our Morocco vs Portugal Prediction

Morocco have been brilliant so far; doing all they need in defence and attack, without exaggeration of either. They have shocked some big teams and will be gunning for the same against Portugal. They will target to be the first African team to reach the semi finals of a FIFA World Cup. However, injuries to top defensive players may slow them down, and hamper this ambition. Portugal on the other hand, have a lot of riches in attack and will see Morocco’s injury woes as an advantage. The North Africans have been impressive, but with these injuries we expect their journey to end at this stage. Our prediction for Morocco – Portugal: Portugal to win.

Morocco vs Portugal - Other Interesting Predictions

Under 2.5 goals

Odds 1.66
Portugal are the best scoring side among the teams still at this competition, while Morocco are the best defensive side. Morocco will miss key figures in defence for this game and while this gives Portugal an advantage, their defensive discipline should be reflected in team play. Portugal have a number of creative players in the team and should be able to open up the Moroccan defence. It may however not be as emphatic as with the Swiss, so we will back under 2.5 goals here.

Goncalo Ramos to score

Odds 3.25
Goncalo Ramos comes into this game as the star of the moment following his heroics against the Swiss. He will be looking to build on his impressive hat trick in the last game and with the coach expected to hand him a start, we will back him to score any time.
